COVID-19 Safety at RecSys 2022

We have been carefully monitoring the COVID situation in order to bring you a safe and enjoyable conference this year. There is a lot of uncertainty, which has made this a decision that took a lot of time, discussion, and waiting. Given the current and expected variants, vaccine effectiveness, community concerns, and covid situations we have observed at other conferences this summer, we have made the following decisions about covid protocols at RecSys:

  • K95/KN95/KF94 masks will be required at all times while attending RecSys. They must be worn properly, covering your nose and mouth.
  • We will not be offering coffee or lunch at the conference. There will be breaks at the usually scheduled times, but attendees must remain masked while at the RecSys venue. This was a difficult decision, but believe this is the best way to keep everyone safe, including the at-risk members of our community. The breaks still feature posters and sponsor booths, so there are plenty of reasons to stick around at the breaks. Coffee-lovers can use this as a chance to explore Seattle’s excellent local coffee shops; there are many nearby, and we will provide a list and map.
  • We have an exciting evening social event planned. Instead of the traditional sit-down banquet, we have rented out the Seattle Aquarium. There will be food and drinks served at the outdoor space at the aquarium and we will have full, private access to the entire indoor space and all the exhibits.
  • We are working with the conference hotel to provide alternative options for conference food and drink that fits with these plans. Likely, we will have a variety of grab-and-go items available to attendees to take back to their rooms, to provide a snack, light dinner, or breakfast for the next morning. We have also built in longer lunch breaks to facilitate groups of attendees to venture outside to find local food trucks or other food options (there are many, we’re blocks from the famous Pike Place Market).

We know these safety protocols will be a relief to some and a disappointment to others. Again, our goal is to keep everyone safe and support all members of our community who want to attend in person while minimizing everyone’s covid risk.

If you have already registered to attend in person and you want to switch your attendance to virtual, you can do so until the early bird deadline free of charge. See details on the registration page.
