Call For Reports, Videos, and Demos

There are three categories of “non-paper” submissions: practitioner reports, videos, and demos. Please see also the separate call for long and short papers.

PRACTITIONER REPORT submissions will focus on reporting experiences with Recommender Systems. In particular, we wish to present practical deployment of techniques and applications of recommender systems, highlighting challenges, lessons, and needs for future research. We invite submissions in three areas: (1) emerging applications and technology (2) case studies; (3) pragmatic issues and research considerations in deploying real applications. The primary emphasis is on advancing our understanding of practical, applied, and pragmatic aspects and to highlight new research challenges in real Recommender System applications. Thus, submissions from industry are strongly encouraged for this category. Practitioner reports will be presented in oral sessions at the conference. Practitioner report submissions consist of one required component:

  1. A one-page, camera-ready extended abstract to be included in the conference proceedings, that addresses any combination of the topics described above.

Deadline: June 11, 2010.

VIDEO submissions provide a venue for presentations that are difficult to convey in a paper-only format. Examples of this include:

  • Demonstrations of innovative research prototypes
  • Demonstrations of innovative aspects of recommender systems
  • Position videos explaining new ways of thinking about recommender systems
  • Visions of future recommender technologies

Submitted videos will be peer-reviewed for their technical content, communication effectiveness, production quality, interest, and relevance to RecSys. Video submissions consist of two required components:

  1. A one-page, camera-ready extended abstract to be included in the conference proceedings. It should briefly describe the content of the video and how it fits the RecSys audience.
  2. The abstract must include a URL to a video (e.g., in YouTube) in a digital format. We request that you make your digital submissions in Apple Quicktime, Windows Media Format, MPEG, or DV-AVI. Videos may be no longer than five minutes and no larger than 30 MB. Videos can be in languages other than English, provided that they include English subtitles.

Deadline: June 11, 2010.

DEMO submissions should report on implementations of new recommender system technologies and concepts. Demos allow conference participants to view novel and noteworthy recommender systems in action, discuss the systems with those who created them, and try them out. Appropriate demos include applications, technologies, and research prototypes. Demos should be interactive and provide attendees a hands-on experience. Presenters must have been directly involved with the development of the system and be able to explain the unique and novel contributions of the system. Accepted demos will be showcased during the poster session. Demo submission consists of two required components and another optional one:

  1. A one-page, camera-ready extended abstract to be included in the conference proceedings. It should describe the demonstrated recommender system (including at least one screenshot) and the novel approaches or ideas it embodies.
  2. A one-page summary of the demo system and the required setup. It should provide information about the presenter(s), including their relationship to the project. It should also provide a detailed description of needed space, power requirements, Internet connectivity, and any other related requirements. Please note that demo presenters will be responsible for providing their own equipment for their demos.
  3. The abstract may include a URL to a video (e.g., in YouTube) in a digital format. We request that you make your digital submissions in Apple Quicktime, Windows Media Format, MPEG, or DV-AVI. Videos may be no longer than five minutes and no larger than 30 MB. Videos can be in languages other than English, provided that they include English subtitles.

Deadline: June 11, 2010

Several packages are available to help you author your videos. Free authoring packages are included in both Windows (Windows Movie Maker) and MacOS (iMovie) platforms. Tutorials can be found here:

All submissions will be handled electronically by the easychair system. Please see the submissions tab for Microsoft Word and LaTex templates. Please direct questions regarding all three submissions to industry2010@recsys.acm.org.
